Neretva River

Flowing through the Dinaric Alps mountains in Southeast Europe, the Sliv Neretva (Neretva River in English) winds around the cities and towns in the southern part of BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA, as well as 20 miles across the Dalmatian coastline of extreme Southern CROATIA. The river carves through steep gorges that are fascinating and "gorge"ous! Amongst the natural beauty that the river and surrounding gorges provide, there are manmade hydroelectric dams. The largest city located along the banks of the Sliv Neretva is Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Other towns include Metović and Ploče in Croatia and Jablanica, Jasenjani, Obalj, Ostrožac, and Ulog in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What in the World? Country #6

Can you guess what country I am?First off, let me introduce you to my geographical location: I am in Eastern Europe! I am divided into two administrative divisions; I cannot tell you what one of them is because my name is part of the admin. division's name, but the other one is the Serbian Republic (Republika Srpska), which aptly borders Serbia. My capital is Sarajevo; can you guess who I am yet? I have one of the lowest urbanization rates in Europe, yet I have several cities with populations between 100,000 and 1 million. I border only three countries: Serbia as I mentioned earlier, and also Croatia and Montenegro. While I am mainly landlocked, I am fortunate to have at least a little bit of access to the Adiatric Sea. Do you know who I am? Let's find out...scroll down for the answer!

Answer: BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA!

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Grolier map

Belonging to Yugoslavia before it separated in 1992*, BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA (Bosnian: Bosna i Hercegovina) is located in southeastern Europe. It is located east of Croatia and west of Montenegro and Serbia. The capital is Sarajevo, and other large cities include Banja Luka, Mostar, Prijedor, Tuzla, and Zenica. The Dinaric Alps mountain range stretches from the northeast towards the southeast, parallel to the Croatian border. Standing in the 0 to 500 meter/1600 feet range and higher in small areas, the lowest elevations are found in the northern fourth of the country and in the south by Mostar, bordering Croatia. Speaking of the Croatian border, Bosnia and Herzegovina has a small and interesting area of land along the Adriatic Sea, and the city of Neum is located on the coast. However, land and water to the west and south of the coastal border essentially belongs to Croatia! From the time period between the years 1992 and 1998, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Dinar was the currency, and its ISO 4217 currency code was BAD! First created in 1998, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Convertible Mark is the current currency. The Convertible Mark's ISO 4217 currency code is BAM - yep, like the onomatopoeia!
