Germany Week in August

The Cologne Cathedral (a.k.a. Kölner Dom or Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria) is a 13th century, Gothic-styled structure and is located in Cologne, GERMANY. According to one of my atlases, it is the most visited monument in Germany and is one of the largest Gothic structures in the world! Construction of this cathedral began in the year 1248 but was halted for centuries, until construction based on the original plan concluded in 1880. BAVARIA, also known as Bayern, is located in southeastern GERMANY and is the largest state in Germany. The capital is Munich (München in German), which has a population over 1 million. Other cities, which have 100,000-1 million inhabitants, include Augsburg, Erlangen, Fürth, and Nuremberg. The Bavarian Alps, Bohemian Forest, and Fränkische Alb (a.k.a. Franconian Jura) are just some of the mountain ranges located in Bavaria.

The Rhine (Rhein) river, which flows for 820 miles (1,320 km), is a well-known river that flows through western GERMANY. In addition, it runs through the Netherlands and along the borders of Austria, France, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. The Rhine is a principal waterway of Germany, apparent by the fact that many major cities were built up alongside the river. These river-straddling cities — which have populations greater than 100,000 — include Bonn, Cologne, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Koblenz, Mainz, and Mannheim.

Black Forest

The Black Forest, also known as Schwarzwald, is a well-known, forested mountain range located in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern GERMANY. The Black Forest is aptly named that because of the extremely dense forests that blanket the mountain range. The highest mountain in the Black Forest mountain range is Feldberg, which towers at almost 4,900 feet (1493 meters). Nearby cities include Baden-Baden, Freiburg im Breisgau, and Offenburg. The large city of Stuttgart is approximately 45-50 miles away from the Black Forest.
