United Arab Emirates' Largest Island
Abu al Abyad is the largest island off the northern coast of UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, a unified state comprised of seven emirates in the Middle East. A spelling of Abu al Abyad with accent marks has a ū instead of u and a cedilla attached to the d. Located in the Persian Gulf*, Abu al Abyad is about 30 kilometers in length from west to east and 10 kilometers in width from north to south. Near the island's center, there is a town not surprisingly called Abu al Abyad! Several kilometers east in Abu al Abyad's east-central region lies the Abu al Abyad Island Airport. Surrounding islands include Al Rafeeq and Al Qantur.
* Geopolitics: In countries such as the U.A.E., the Persian Gulf is oftentimes referred to as the Arabian Gulf or simply the Gulf.

Musandam Peninsula
Peninsula Week Post #4
The Musandam Peninsula sticks out northward into the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, in the Middle East. This peninsula is interesting because it is basically an exclave of OMAN. This means that the peninsula is part of Oman, but geographically separated from the rest of the country because of the United Arab Emirates. The U.A.E. is a wealthy country located south of Musandam Peninsula. Standing at over 6,800 feet (over 2,000 meters), Jabal al Harim is the highest point in the peninsula's area. Communities on the peninsula include Al Khaşab, Kamzar, and Sha'am.

Basics About United Arab Emirates
South of the Persian Gulf in the Middle East, the UNITED ARAB EMIRATES is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Most of the wealth is thanks to its oil industry, and the United Arab Emirates is a member of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries). The capital, Abu Dhabi, is not the city with the highest population. Dubai, home of modern buildings and a rapidly growing population, has that distinction. The World archipelago and the Palm Islands are artificial islands off the coast of Dubai. Most inhabitants in the U.A.E. were not born there, but are foreigners who came for employment and other reasons. Areas along and near the Persian Gulf coastline are populated with cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while the arid southern part of the country is sparsely populated.

United Arab Emirates

Click here to enlarge the map from Eric Olason in a new window.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES is a very wealthy and financially-developed Middle Eastern country. The U.A.E. is famous for its modern urban skyscrapers and unique artificial islands. As of a June 2015 update and since its construction in 2010, the Burj Khalifa building in the city of Dubai is still the tallest building in the world! Meanwhile, the World Islands and Palm Islands are located in the Persian Gulf (sometimes known as the Arabian Gulf) north of the country, off the coast of Dubai. The geographic location of the major islands goes from Palm Jumeirah to the left, the World Islands in the middle, and Deira Island archipelago to the right. The Palm Jebel Ali archipelago is partially built to the southwest of Palm Jumeirah. There are two bordering countries: Oman to the southeast and Saudi Arabia to the west. The capital is Abu Dhabi, spelled Abū Zaby (cedilla under the Z) in Arabic. The largest-populated city is Dubai. The currency is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (Emirati Dirham), and its ISO 4217 currency code is AED.
