Independence Day Recently Celebrated in Kiribati

People all across KIRIBATI celebrated their country's Independence Day on Sunday, July 12th. Kiribati achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Happy belated Independence Day!

Kiribati Extinct and Endangered Species

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ for KIRIBATI in Oceania lists 1 extinct species since the beginning of IUCN recordkeeping and 10 endangered species. The Christmas Sandpiper is Kiribati's sole extinct species, estimated to have been globally extinct starting in the 1850s. Kiribati's endangered species are the Golden Sandfish, Green Turtle, Holothuria nobilis and Holothuria whitmaei Sea Cucumbers, Humphead Wrasse fish, Kiritimati Reed Warbler, Phoenix Petrel bird, Polynesian Storm Petrel, Prickly Redfish, and Rimatara Lorikeet (Kuhl's Lorikeet, or Kura). Also known as Bokikokiko or the Christmas Island Warbler, the Kiritimati Reed Warbler resides mostly on the island of Kiritimati (Christmas Island) but also on Teeraina (Washington Island). It may be extinct on Tabuaeran, a ringlike island featuring a lagoon in the center.

Tarawa: Island and Capital

Tarawa, the capital of the Pacific Ocean country of KIRIBATI, is situated on a small, highly-populated area of land. The capital is on an island with the same name, obviously called Tarawa island. The island is part of a V-shaped string of islands including Abaokoro, Bonriki, Buariki, Eita, and Marenanuka, among others. Tarawa and the other aforementioned islands are part of the Gilbert Islands' northern fringe.

This country achieved independence from the United Kingdom on Thursday, July 12th, 1979. Kiribati is north of Tuvalu and Tokelau and east of Nauru. The capital is Tarawa (South Tarawa), a coral atoll in the Gilbert Islands located in western Kiribati. National government headquarters are located in the community of Bairiki. The official languages of Kiribati are English and Gilbertese. The people of Kiribati use two currencies for monetary transactions: the Kiribati Dollar (KID) and the Australian Dollar (AUD).
