Episode Info: While racing through Scotland in February 2020, teams receive shocking and unprecedented news — for the first time in the show’s history, “The Amazing Race” suspends production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Amazing Race’s episode 3 brought teams to Glasgow, a west-central Scottish city. You likely know that Scotland is considered a country within the larger UNITED KINGDOM. Before arriving in Glasgow, teams departed from the Easton Station near London and travelled by train for about 400 miles; the journey was long enough that they took advantage of resting on the train’s bunk beds!
● Once they arrived in Glasgow, teams continued onto the NCP Car Park in search for a clue on a Renault car’s windshield. Several driving team members had difficulty with the car’s stick shift, considering they are more familiar with driving a vehicle with an automatic shift. They drove to the West End and found the Òran Mór building, an entertainment venue and former church named after the Gaelic phrase translating in English to “great melody of life” (“big song”).
● Roadblock (“Who Thinks They Have This One in the Bag?”): At Òran Mór, one member on each team was tasked with joining a Scottish pipe band, but first he or she had to assemble the iconic bagpipe with the help of a “bagpipe anatomy” illustration. A correctly assembled bagpipe is then approved, so the team member then tried to blow out a song (sometimes discordantly) with the bagpipe band to receive the next clue.
● This clue brought them to the black-and-bronze Walter MacFarlane Saracen Fountain in Alexandra Park. Expertly sculpted by David Watson Stevenson in 1901, the ornate fountain initially appeared in Kelingrove Park for the 1901 International Fair and was relocated to Alexandra Park in 1914. The clue box at this location contained Detour clues.
● Detour, choice between “Kilt” or “Rebuilt”: teams choosing the Kilt option visited the Panopticon Music Hall to rehearse and recite “Donald, Where’s Your Troosers?” — while wearing a kilt, of course! Teams choosing the Rebuilt option visited Fishers’ Cooperage to hone their potential craftsmanship skills as a cooper. They had to fix the head/top of two whiskey barrels, a process involving lots of hammering and prying to loosen and properly reposition the barrel rings. Arun and Natalia’s whiskey barrels were giving them prolonged trouble, so they decided to switch Detours. Since no other team switched Detours in this episode, the father and daughter duo’s switch likely cost them precious time — and the chance at $1 million dollars in The Amazing Race Season 33 competition. ● Episode info: Eleven teams begin their journey and travel to London.
This post recaps the second hour of The Amazing Race season 33’s two-hour premiere episode on January 5th. Teams continued their journey in London, England, UNITED KINGDOM. After the episode 1 Pit Stop at the National Museum of History, teams then visited the Royal Mail Center (Mail Rail) in Clerkenwell. That facility has sorted and delivered mail by train for over 75 years. The current mail transporting vehicle resembles a modern, domelike version of a small train that an amusement park might have. ● Roadblock (“Who Still Gets Mail?”), in which a team member searched among hundreds of letters and other mail to find the The Amazing Race clue. While the clue cards’ coloration was not as vibrant as usual, the clues were relatively straightforward to discover compared to most tasks in the shows’ extensive history of clue-finding tasks. An example of a task on the other extreme of the clue-finding scale would be the season 31, episode 9 (CROATIA) Detour in which Bret and Chris took hours to find a goblet and three rusty medallions underwater; they gave up the task after struggling to spot the two remaining medallions! Therefore, finding the season 33 clue among several large bins of mail was a relative cake walk compared to the season 31 clue. With relatively few motions of rustling through the mail, Penn and Ray found their clues right away but did not redeem their clues right away; they second-guessed themselves due to how easy the task was! Penn and Ray searched some more to see if there is something else to find, but this allowed other teams to catch up. Let’s just say that the other teams did not second-guess themselves upon finding the clue, so a couple teams found an opportunity to surpass Penn and Ray.
● Teams redeemed their “snail mail” clues and subsequently travelled to Leicester Square (Theater City) to find the episode’s Detour.
● Detour, choice between “Bull’s-Eye Mate” or “Decorate”: teams choosing the Bull’s-Eye Mate option visited the Flight Club Victoria pub and had to throw three darts per team member in each round. Within a round of three throws, each member has to throw one dart that hits the bull’s-eye to advance to the Pit Stop. Teams choosing the Decorate option visited a bakery that displayed fruit-topped cakes resembling the flags of about a dozen or so countries. Before advancing to the Pit Stop, teams were tasked to figure out the flags of two European Union member nations then decorate their cakes — to the best of their artistic ability — to resemble those flags. Flag possibilities included Chile, France (correct), Germany (correct), Hungary (correct), Italy (correct), Jamaica, Lithuania (correct), Norway, South Africa, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Some teams initially decorated their cakes based on the flags of Norway and/or the United Kingdom, but all Decorate Detour teams eventually chose France and Germany. France’s flag cake was topped with blueberries and raspberries, while the top of Germany’s flag cake featured blackberries, peach slices, and raspberries.
● Pit Stop: Russell Square Metro Station area
● At the sort-of “Pit Stop,” contestants arrived on a double-decker bus parked near the Russell Square Metro Station and enjoyed a cup of tea. Since Phil Keoghan told them to continue their Amazing Race journey right away with a trip to Glasgow, Scotland, no prize was awarded to Dusty and Ryan who arrived in first place. After waiting since the December 16th, 2020 finale of The Amazing Race season 32, I and my fellow American viewers of the globetrotting show eagerly turned our TVs, apps, or streaming devices on to CBS for the two-hour season 33 premiere on January 5th, 2022. Indications of the coronavirus pandemic’s effects on TV production were felt right away on this season — all teams were virtually connected and therefore did not line up at the starting line in a physical location such as Los Angeles. ● Teams proceeded to Trafalgar Square in search of someone dressed in a red phone booth costume. Their clue card took them to the richly ornate Canada Gate near Buckingham Palace. Teams then encountered a…
● Detour, choice between “Artist Den” or “Digiben”: teams choosing the Artist Den option used wallpaper paste to assemble an artwork mural "puzzle" of the Union Jack flag. Several teams had difficulty determining the artwork’s correct orientation on the wall. The major difficulty of the Digiben detour is figuring out what (or who) a “bobby” is. Teams choosing the Digiben option had to find a bobby — a blackly uniformed London Metropolitan Police officer — who handed them a clue taking them to Parliament Square. At the square near Victoria Station, teams were on the lookout for Little Ben, a miniature version of the Big Ben clock tower (Elizabeth Tower). The final detour clue took them to the Underground subway’s Piccadilly Circus train station where a deejay played music and offered the next clue.
● Teams visited The Chipping Forecast restaurant in Soho. They found "Queen Elizabeth II" and "Boris Johnson" lookalikes seated at a table having a "nosh" — of course, they were eating fish and chips! The queen and prime minister impressionists gave teams their Pit Stop clue.

This Season Finale episode is suitably named “This One is for One Million Dollars” as a direct quote from contestant Christie Woods, whose fellow team member is Colin Guinn. The three other teams competing in this episode are Nicole Franzel with Victor Arroyo, Korey Kuhl with Tyler Oakley, and Jamal Zadran with Leo Temory. Sorted by chronological order, here were the challenges and happenings encountered by the four remaining teams during the competition’s 11th leg in this June 26th, 2019 episode of The Amazing Race, UNITED STATES series:
● Departures: Since teammates Christie & Colin arrived to the Bovenwijde Lake island Pit Stop first in episode 10, they were allowed to begin this leg of the race before other teams at 10:13 PM Central European Time (CET) at night. In chronological order, the following teams were able to depart after Christie & Colin: Korey & Tyler at 11:35 PM, Jamal & Leo after midnight at 1:20 AM, and Nicole & Victor at 1:55 AM.
● After flying to London, teams visited the Gatwick Aviation Museum and then found out the location for helicopter rides. Once in a helicopter, teams took a scenic journey over the prominent English Channel chalk cliffs known as the Seven Sisters and flew to Dover Castle.
● Roadblock: Upon arriving at Dover Castle, one member of each Amazing Race team — Christie, Korey, Leo, and Victor — deciphered an alphanumeric code by listening to a Neville Chamberlain speech and detecting the fourth, fifteenth, and thirtieth (4th, 15th, and 30th) words he spoke. The letters from these words are then decrypted into specific numbers, and these numbers correspond to three-letter groupings. Teams had to rearrange these final letters to form a sentence: “The Dunkirk evacuation has begun. We will never surrender.” This wartime message was then printed on a typewriter, and teams handed the message over to a military official outside the Dover Castle.
● Teams flew back to London via helicopter and walked (or ran) to the Masthouse Terrace Pier, located on the Isle of Dogs in the Thames river.
● Teams sailed on the Thames in a speedboat to Savoy Pier then found their way to the Piccadilly Circus, a road junction and public space in the borough/city of Westminster. A “queen” clad in gold attire gave the teams their clue to arrive at the Detour.
● Detour, choice between “Know” and “Row”: Jamal & Leo, Korey & Tyler, and Nicole & Victor chose the Know Detour. They took a taxi and, according to the taxi driver’s instructions, memorized fifteen streets and seven landmarks. They found the Master of carriage drivers along Kensington Road and had to correctly recite these locations to him. Christie & Colin chose the Row Detour, in which they rowed a double scull boat for 200 meters. They had to complete this exercise within one minute to receive a clue.
● Pit Stop: Teams visited the Camden Market in search for the Pit Stop, but they had to recreate a window display using items they bought from market stores. When their displays are determined to be accurately copied, teams were able to check in to the nearby Pit Stop. Engaged (and soon to be married) couple Nicole & Victor were eliminated from The Amazing Race competition due to arriving last at the Pit Stop.
● Interesting trivia notes: Jamal & Leo were celebrated for becoming The Amazing Race’s first team ever to achieve a final four placement and complete the penultimate race leg three times; this is their third season of competition. Both men also passed Rachel Reilly-Villegas’ record of playing the most legs (episodes) of The Amazing Race. After Brendon & Rachel and Cody & Jessica from previous seasons, Nicole & Victor became the third CBS Big Brother team to reach the season-finale episode.

Situated in northern Wales in the UNITED KINGDOM, the current medieval Caernarfon Castle began construction in 1283 from the architectural vision of King Edward I. The fortress is noted for its polygonal towers, some of which are shaped differently than the others. It is also part of the "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd" UNESCO World Heritage Site (UNESCO webpage). Caernarfon Castle is located in Gwynedd County and west of Caernarfon town, north of the Afon Seiont (River Seiont), south of Menai Strait and Anglesey island, and east of Caernarfon Bay. Smaller than the large South West Peninsula in England and the peninsula in the Pembrokeshire county of southwest Wales, Lleyn Peninsula (Llŷn Peninsula) juts westward into the Saint George’s Channel in northwestern Wales. Caernarfon Bay, the larger Irish Sea, and the Isle of Anglesey are north of Lleyn. Cardigan Bay and the Celtic Sea are south, while Tremadog Bay is west. While much of Wales is covered north to south by the Cambrian Mountains, Lleyn is generally lower in elevation. Some areas on the peninsula have elevations at or below sea level, while others stand above 300 meters or 1,000 feet. At 564 meters or about 1850 feet tall, Yr Eifl is located near the northern coast next to Caernarfon Bay. Bardsey Sound separates Bardsey Island from the southwest coast of Lleyn. Capes and points include Braich-y-Pwll, Carreg Ddu, Penrhyn Mawr, and Trwyn Cilan. Meanwhile, there are several ports around the peninsula. For example, there is Porth Neigwl which is known as Hell’s Mouth in the English language! Towns and villages on the peninsula include Aberdaron, Abersoch, Criccieth, Llanllyfni, Nefyn, and Pwllheli.
Comprised of two main archipelagos, the HEBRIDES are located off the western coast of Scotland in the North Atlantic Ocean. Like most of Scotland, both sheep and land for grazing are common. Inner Hebrides is the grouping of islands that is closer to mainland Scotland, while the islands of the Outer Hebrides are aptly named for being situated farther out into the ocean. The body of water separating the two groups is the Little Minch. The Minch (also known as North Minch) is east of Lewis & Harris island, west of Scotland, and north of Skye island. The Sea of the Hebrides is in the south-central part of my graphic, surrounded by the islands of Barra, Canna, Coll, Rùm, South Uist, Tiree, and Skye. The Firth of Lorn separates the Isle of Mull from islands like Colonsay, Islay, Kerrera, 
Lismore, and Jura. You may have noticed, on my graphic, two towns named Uig - one on Lewis & Harris, and one in northern Skye; that is not a mistake! In fact, there is even a community named Uig on Coll!
Inner Hebrides
In this grouping, Skye is the largest island, followed by the Isle of Mull. Besides those two islands, the islands are much smaller; some do not have humans living on them. Amongst every inhabited island in the archipelago, the population and population density is low. According to the Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organizations, Skye's population density is less than 4.5 people per square mile while the population is around 12,000. Other islands include Coll, Eigg, Lismore, Muck, Raasay, Rùm (also known as Rhum), and Tiree. The islands featured in the small inset map (which is scaled down 65% as noted) in the larger graphic above also belong to the Inner Hebrides.
Outer Hebrides
In this grouping, the largest island by far is Lewis & Harris. Marked by a white star with a dark blue border on my graphic, Stornoway is the administrative center for the Outer Hebrides and has the largest population of all towns in the Hebrides. Other smaller yet major islands include Barra, North Uist, and South Uist. These three islands, along with a smaller Benbecula island, have populations above 1,000. Islands with small or no populations include Berneray, Eriskay, Mingulay, Pabbay, and Vatersay.
Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the SHETLAND ISLANDS belong to Scotland and is an archipelago comprised of at least 300 islands. The Shetland Islands sit northeast of the Orkney Islands and less than 200 miles west of Norway. The largest and most populated island is simply considered Mainland. The capital and largest city, Lerwick, is located on the eastern shore of Mainland. All located north-northeast of Mainland, the next largest islands in order are Yell, Unst, and Fetlar. The Scalloway Islands, located southwest and south of Mainland, include the islands of East Burra, West Burra, Hildasay, Oxna, Papa, and South Havra. The North Isles include Balta, Uyea, Yell, Unst, and Fetlar. Interesting Fact: According to my musically talented friend, Matt, the Shetland Islands is renowned for having many talented fiddlers!
The highest point on the ISLE OF MAN, located in the Irish Sea between Ireland and the United Kingdom, is Snaefell. It stands at 3,024 feet (620 meters) in north-central Isle of Man. Learn more about the Isle of Man!
Surrounded by the Irish Sea and located west of the United Kingdom and east of Ireland, the ISLE OF MAN is a self-governing British Crown Dependency containing Isle of Man (the main island) and several much smaller islands surrounding it. The second largest island is Calf of Man, which is located southwest of the main island; according to the Wikipedia list of islands (opens in new window), its population is 2. Other islands include Chicken Rock, Kitterland, Saint Mary's Isle, Saint Michael's Isle, and Saint Patrick's Isle. The capital and largest city is Douglas. Even though the Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom, the currency is a local issue of the British Pound (GBP): the Manx Pound.
