Syria Independence Day

People all across SYRIA recently celebrated their country's Independence Day yesterday. Syria achieved total independence from France in 1946. Syria’s Independence Day is also known as Evacuation Day because of French troops evacuating from Syria, thus resulting in the Middle Eastern nation's full sovereignty. Happy belated Independence/Evacuation Day, and may you have peaceful years in the future!

Syria's Independence Day

On April 17th, SYRIA commemorates the end of the French Mandate in 1946. This Independence Day is also known as Evacuation Day because of the French "leaving" behind their colonial rule in Syria. Of course it is no mystery that the people of Syria are struggling through difficult and war-torn times, but let this day and others in the future be the stepping stones toward a hopeful future.

Syria Exports

According to National Geographic MapMaker (mapmaker.nationalgeographic.org) and MIT's Observatory of Economic Complexity (atlas.media.mit.edu), the following items are major exports of SYRIA: aluminum, animal hides, apples, asphalt, baked goods, barley, beverages, cement, chickpeas, citrus and tropical fruit, cleaning products, clothing and textiles, confectionery sugar, cotton, dairy products, dried legumes, fertilizer, footwear, gravel, gypsum, iron ore and products, jam and jelly, lentils, livestock, marble, meat, nuts, oilseeds, olive oil, olives, packaged food, pears, perfume plants, petroleum and petroleum products, phosphates, refined copper, salt, spices, sugar beets, tobacco, wheat, and wool. According to the International Monetary Fund (data.imf.org), countries and territories buying and importing most of those exports (February 2017 statistics) include Lebanon (top importer), Turkey, China, Iraq, Tunisia, Spain, Sudan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Aruba, Egypt, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, India, France, Italy, Kuwait, Algeria, and Libya.

Syria Endangered Species

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ for SYRIA in Western Asia and the Middle East lists 1 extinct species (Tristramella magdelainae cichlid fish), 19 critically endangered species, and 40 endangered species. These are some critically endangered species in the Syrian Arab Republic: Barada Spring Minnow fish, Damascus Bream fish, European Eel, Galilean Loach, Halap Loach, Leopard Barbel fish, Long-Spine Bream fish, Marqīyah Spring Minnow fish, Northern Bald Ibis, and Sociable Plover bird. Endangered species include the Clear-Winged Demoiselle damselfly, Euphrates Softshell Turtle, Fin Whale, Golan Iris flower, Grant Duff's Iris flower, Jordan Barbel fish, Lebanon Viper snake, Levantine Nase fish, Nazareth Iris flower, Orontes Spined Loach, Persian Fallow Deer, Steppe Eagle, Syrian Demoiselle damselfly, and Syrian Spotted Bleak fish. Other species named after Syria include the Syrian Bluet damselfly, Syrian Calomyscus rodent, Syrian Clubtail dragonfly, Syrian Fir tree, Syrian Juniper tree, Syrian Serin bird, Syrian Sprite damselfly, and Syrian Woodpecker.

Syria's Cities

SYRIA, a Middle Eastern country located east of Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey, northeast of Israel, north of Jordan, and west of Iraq, has several major population centers like other countries in the Middle East and Asia. Aleppo (Ḥalab in Arabic) is the largest city with over 2 million residents. Damascus (Dimashq), located in the southern part of the country near Lebanon, is the capital and second largest city with a population of almost 2 million (as of this post). The cities with populations between 100,000 and 1 million are Ar Raqqah, Hamath (Ḥamāh), the third largest city of Homs (Ḥimṣ), and the coastal city of Latakia (Al-Lādhiqīyah). The people of Syria are still encountering extreme hardships as a result of the civil war and the Assad government which severely restricted freedoms for them. Most Syrians are Muslims.
