People all across several countries in Central America — COSTA RICA, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, HONDURAS, and NICARAGUA — celebrated Independence Day on Tuesday, September 15th. All five countries achieved independence from Spain in 1821. Happy belated Independence Day!
The following items are major exports of COSTA RICA: bananas, beans, coffee, electronic components, medical equipment, melons, ornamental plants, pineapples, potatoes, seafood, and sugarcane. According to the International Monetary Fund (data.imf.org), countries and territories buying and importing most of those exports (February 2017 statistics) include the United States (top importer), the Netherlands, Belgium, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Spain, Japan, Italy, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Finland, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Mexico, and France.
On May 22nd, the SUNY-ESF Institute for Species Exploration announced ten recently discovered species that topped its list, ranging from a one-celled organism to a much larger tree species (SUNY stands for State University of New York and ESF stands for Environmental Science and Forestry). The Olinguito mammal (in the raccoon family) lives in the Andes mountains of Colombia and Ecuador. Kaweesak's Dragon Tree was discovered in Loei and Lop Buri provinces in Thailand. Named after the Antarctic Geological Drilling Program (ANDRILL), the ice-dwelling Andrill Anemone were discovered under a glacier on Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf. Aptly named for its appearance, tiny Skeleton Shrimp were found in a cave on Santa Catalina island in California, USA.
The Orange Penicillium fungus was discovered in Tunisia soil, while scientists found a type of one-celled Amoeboid Protist in underwater caves in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically off the coast of Spain. Northeastern Australia is a habitat for the rare Leaf-Tailed Gecko. Clean Room Microbes have an interesting discovery story. They were discovered in spacecraft assembly clean rooms, where most microscopic organisms cannot survive, in the USA (Florida) and French Guiana. Another interesting small organism is the Tinkerbell Fairyfly, a parasitic wasp discovered in Costa Rica. Finally, eyeless Domed Land Snails certainly have a ghostly appearance with their translucent shells. They were found in western Croatia's Lukina Jama-Trojama caves.
The Burica Peninsula in Central America is interesting because it is a rather skinny piece of land that is nevertheless shared by two countries. COSTA RICA is the western side of the Burica Peninsula which drops down into the Pacific Ocean. West of the Bahía de Charco Azul, the peninsula's eastern side is PANAMA. It is partially forested and has several cities, most notably Puerto Armuelles, Panama on the northeast shoreline of the peninsula. Other communities include Clarida and Las Penas in Costa Rica and Limones, Puerto Armuelles, Quebrada del Medio, and San Vicente in Panama.
A country located south of Nicaragua and west of Panama in Central America, COSTA RICA can celebrate its dedication to preserving the forested interior of the country for years to come. Costa Rica conserves its rainforests and vital ecosystems with many national parks and wildlife reserves. Even the Caribbean Sea coastline is dotted with several of these conservation efforts, including Parque Nacional (P.N.) Rincón de la Vieja, P.N. Barra del Colorado, P.N. Tortuguero, and P.N. Cahuita, and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. There is a national park, P.N. Braulo Carrillo, located closely north of Costa Rica's capital, San José. Parque Internacional la Armistad is a large forested area that is also found in Panama. There are other conserved areas in Costa Rica that I have not listed.
The Irazú Volcano, which is just down the road from the capital of COSTA RICA (San José), is surely a sight to see in aerial photography and in real life!
COSTA RICA is a rainforested country and popular tourist spot located in Central America. Costa Rica's bordering countries are Nicaragua and Panama. It also borders the Caribbean Sea on the right coast and the Pacific Ocean on the left coast. The capital is San José, which has almost 900,000 residents. There is a volcano named Volcán Irazú just to the right of the capital. Also, Costa Rica is known as Rich Coast in Spanish - the country's official language. The currency is the Costa Rican Colón, and its ISO 4217 currency code is CRC.
