The Amazing Race 39, Episode 4 Recap

Episode Description: Teams are lost in the confusing alleyways of [Marrakesh’s] medina.

Episode Airdate: Wednesday, October 14th, 2026 on CBS

The episode description above mentions a medina which is a historic section of an Arab city in North Africa. There is a city named Medina, SAUDI ARABIA but teams are still in MOROCCO. Throughout the medina of Marrakesh, teams encountered something called a Scramble — three challenges to complete in whatever chronological order they wished. Located at Souk Smata, Challenge 1/3 was a Roadblock fittingly titled “I Need a Sole Mate”; one member of each team searched through thousands of shoes to pair a lonely shoe with another one with the same color and pattern. This task was difficult because some shoes had very similar colors and patterns and therefore didn’t quite match. Dafina and Saran activated their Roadside Assistance triangle so that both teammates can search for the correct shoe match. That was the first-ever Roadside Assistance in Amazing Race history! They were pleased with how quickly the game-play advantage and their efficient teamwork allowed them to find the matching shoe in a relatively short amount of time.

Challenge 2/3 was titled “Dye ‘n Dry” and was located at the Souk des Teinturiers (Dyers Souk). Teams were tasked with dying several bundles of yarn. They had to produce one blue bundle and two yellow bundles by scooping the exact amount of powdered dye pigment and completely soaking the bundles with water and the powder. These pigments included natural materials such as saffron, poppy, mint, indigo, etc. “Pick Up a Moroccan Rug” was Challenge 3/3 and was located in Rahba Kedima Square. Teams carried a nine-foot handmade rug for quite a distance and laid it out at the Zine Zen Gastronomie Restaurant & Rooftop without getting lost in the maze of narrow bazaar walkways in Marrakesh’s medina. No Express Pass was activated in any of the three challenges.

At each Scramble location, teams were given a puzzle piece containing a portion of an Arabic script. Once the three challenges were completed, teams put the pieces together to reveal the specific Pit Stop locale in Marrakesh: Ben Youssef Madrasa. Ben Youssef Madrasa is historically known as the largest Islamic college in North Africa. Buildings on the campus are made from cedarwood from the nearby Atlas Mountains and are adorned with intricate and colorful tiles from ITALY. At the end of this episode there were sneak-peeks of the next week’s episode: teams are in Tiranë, ALBANIA. Matt and Michelle are standing by the Driver’s Seat board and get to chose which teams have to do the least amount, average amount, or highest amount of effort in the upcoming task. Andrea and Anuar are shown having problems with directions. Since they arrived at the Pit Stop in second place in episode 4, did their navigational difficulties end their experiences on the Amazing Race? Find out with the episode 5 recap coming soon on the GeoFact of the Day Blog!
