On Friday, August 28th, 2015, UNITED STATES' Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell issued Order 3337, officially renaming Mount McKinley to Denali with President Obama's endorsement and support. Native residents of Alaska affectionately named North America's tallest mountain Denali for decades, and now this resolution makes the name official. Meaning "the great one" in the Athabaskan language, Denali was previously named Mt. McKinley since 1898 in honor of President William McKinley. The official renaming comes at the heels of President Obama's Monday visit to Alaska, where he will highlight concerns of climate change impacting Arctic regions. Denali stands at 20,237 feet, which is 83 feet less than the 1952 measurement. The GeoFact of the Day Blog's original Mt. McKinley (now Denali) post has been updated.
