Egypt Extinct and Endangered Species


As of June 30th, 2015, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ for EGYPT in North Africa lists one extinct species and one extinct-in-the-wild species since the beginning of IUCN recordkeeping, 11 critically endangered species, and 28 endangered species. One extinct species previously living in Egypt is the Chambardea letourneuxi mussel. The Scimitar-horned Oryx is regionally extinct in Egypt, but it is found in captivity elsewhere in northern and western Africa and beyond.

The eleven critically endangered species listed for the country are the Addax, Angel Shark, Balearic Shearwater bird, European Eel, Hawksbill Turtle, Kleinmann's Tortoise, Mediterranean Monk Seal, Sinai Baton Blue butterfly, Slender-billed Curlew, Sociable Lapwing, and Medemia argun palm plant. The Sinai Baton Blue species occupies only 2 square kilometers of area in the Mount Sinai massif, while its total range is about 7 square kilometers.
