Geographic Center of North America
It is no dispute that Pierce County in north-central North Dakota (The Peace Garden State) in the United States is the geographic center of North America. However, two areas within that county are considered the geographic center. The city of Rugby built a field stone cairn that reads, "Geographic Center of North America / Rugby, ND". The town's website and welcome sign proudly proclaim that Rugby is the geographic center. However, that website acknowledges that the true geographic center "is located approximately 6 miles west of Balta, Pierce County, North Dakota" according to the 1931 U.S. Geological Survey. Balta is located about 14 miles south of Rugby. When Central America is included in the definition of North America - Central America is part of the continent North America - then Balta is indeed the geographic center. The area surrounding the center is dotted with small and large lakes such as Davis Lake, Kilgore Lake, and Smoky Lake. Finally, Pierce County is west of Benson County, southeast of Bottineau County, east of McHenry County, south of Rolette County, northeast of Sheridan County, and northwest of Wells County.
