April Elections

Multiple countries around the world are holding or recently held elections in the month of April. The year 2014 will be remembered for several revolutionary elections in countries like AFGHANISTAN, GUINEA-BISSAU, INDIA, INDONESIA, and IRAQ. In Afghanistan, presidential elections were recently held to decide who will be the successor to Hamid Karzai. Despite terrorist threats and violence, many men and women went to the polls to vote for a president in a somewhat democratic election. The results are still being tallied and expected to be released soon. In the West African country of Guinea-Bissau, this year's election is the first democratic election after the military coup of 2012. In Indonesia, early vote counts in the parliamentary election suggest that an opposition party known as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan) may be victorious over the Golkar Party. However, the voter margin between the two parties was smaller than anticipated, according to the New York Times. Other countries that held elections in the beginning of April or will hold elections throughout the rest of the month include ALGERIA, COSTA RICA, HUNGARY, MACEDONIA, and MALTA.
