San Marino Elevation
SAN MARINO is a tiny country that is completely surrounded by Italy. Regardless of its small size, the elevation contrasts sporadically throughout the country. The main downtown area of San Marino, the capital with the country's namesake, sits atop Monte Titano (Mount Titan). This is the tallest peak, standing right in the middle of the country at over 2,400 feet and 700 meters . The mountain and historic part of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (UNESCO website link) starting in the year 2008 because the city dates back to the 13th century, has historic defense walls, towers, gates, and bastions that protected the area for many years, and boasts other historic landmarks like centuries-old convents, theaters, and a 19th century basilica.
Back to discussing elevation, Northern San Marino is the lowest area in the country with elevations that drop down to about 160 feet or 49 meters. The elevation generally increases as you move southward, although areas south of Monte Titano are lower in elevation. Western San Marino and parts of Eastern San Marino range from 500 to 1,000 feet, while Southern San Marino varies within a 1,000 feet range (800 to 1800 feet).
