Turks and Caicos Islands
Located southeast of The Bahamas and north of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) in the Caribbean Sea, the TURKS and CAICOS ISLANDS is an overseas territory (belonging to the United Kingdom) that possesses a sprinkling of larger islands and smaller cays. The Turks & Caicos Islands are separated into two island groupings. The Caicos Islands stretch across a dominant portion of the overseas territory and include larger islands like Providenciales, North Caicos, Grand Caicos, and East Caicos (which has not been populated since the 1900s). The Turks Islands, comprised of Grand Turk, Salt Cay, and several additional cays, occupy only a tiny portion of the Caribbean Sea and is found east of the Turks Islands Passage. Turks and Caicos' total population is approximately 45,000; the most populated island is Providenciales, where 22,000 inhabitants live. The capital, located on Grand Turk island, is Grand Turk (Cockburn Town). Like in the British Virgin Islands, another overseas territory belonging to the United Kingdom, the currency is the U.S. Dollar - not the British Pound.
