The Amazing Race 32, Episode 4 Recap


The Amazing Race’s fourth episode of Season 32 aired on Wednesday, November 4th and was set in Ascunción, the national capital of PARAGUAY. This episode provided another opportunity for teams to activate their Yield hourglasses to potentially delay teams, but no team took that opportunity.

● Episode info on CBS — Teams race through Asunción, Paraguay, where they must either stack a pyramid of watermelons or perform a traditional Paraguayan bottle dance.

● In the beginning of this leg of the race, teams encountered the “Who is Feeling Instrumental?” Roadblock. Visiting the city’s Landfill Harmonic musical orchestra, teams had to gather materials such as a jug, plank of wood, and strings to replicate an example cello.

● Teams found another Yield opportunity. No one chose to use this opportunity to delay teams.

Route Info entitled “Drink It”: teams concocted a tereré, which is an herbal beverage known as Paraguay’s national drink.

Detour, choice between “Stack Your Melons” or “Use Your Melon”: teams choosing the first option gathered a bunch of watermelons and attempted to stack them in a pyramid shape. DeAngelo and Gary had particular difficulty completing this challenge because the watermelons kept slipping out of place! Hours later, the duo finally completed the challenge at nightfall.

Teams choosing the second option learned and performed the traditional Paraguayan pastime of balancing bottles on their heads while dancing. The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan noted to viewers that this episode’s Detour is considered a Double Switchback; both Detour options were the same activities in an episode of Season 20. Before appearing on the show, James and Will happened to watch Season 20 and practiced the bottles-on-head challenge! Fittingly, they chose to complete this challenge rather than the watermelon one. Pit Stop: Plaza Italia, which is named for the Italian immigrant families living in the city

● Episode 5 will take place across the pond in Paris, FRANCE and will involve a cooking task and carnival games. Haley and Kaylynn evaded elimination in this episode, but they will encounter a Speed Bump task.
