Indiana is known for being a manufacturing hub in the United States. Therefore, there are many Hoosier factories boosting the state's economy but also polluting Indiana's air, water, and land. Not all factories are featured in the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory Program, but the pollution of many factories and other facilities in Indiana are tracked by this program. While some corporations reuse and recycle chemicals, others are not so proactive in protecting the environment. Thankfully, the EPA's Toxics Release Inventory Program (the website's link is above) allows you to access information about facilities in your local area. With the map at the bottom of the webpage, you can find out how companies are polluting and whether they are trying to protect the environment.
In Indiana, Elkhart County has the most TRI sites (84). Focusing on a population basis, this would be surprising because Marion County (with 71 TRI sites) has a population 4.5 times larger than Elkhart County. However, Elkhart County has a large manufacturing economy. Nicknamed the RV Capital of the World, the city of Elkhart produces many recreational vehicles for the United States and other countries. Below is a top ten list of counties with the most TRI sites, followed by an exclusive GeoFact of the Day Blog map.
#1 - Elkhart County (84 TRI sites)
#2 - Marion County (71)
#3 - Lake County (56)
#4 - Allen County (45)
