Africa's Olympic Medals
This post would not have been possible without convenient information from the Medalists search page, Olympics website (www.olympic.org/athletes).
For the Summer and Winter Olympics, dedicated athletes from all across Africa compete to bring home victory and medals for their countries. While typical Olympic Games media coverage does not focus much on athletes from the second largest continent on Earth, it is worthwhile to congratulate athletes from almost 30 African countries that brought home the gold, silver, and bronze so far. Colored gold in my map above, 13 countries have won at least one gold medal in addition to silver and/or bronze. Those countries are ALGERIA, BURUNDI, CAMEROON, EGYPT, ETHIOPIA, KENYA, MOROCCO, MOZAMBIQUE, NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA, TUNISIA, UGANDA, and ZIMBABWE.
Burundi's Venuste Niyongabo won a gold medal in the men's 5000 meter track event at Atlanta (1996). This is so far the only medal won by Burundi Olympic athletes. Mozambique's Maria Mutola, who competed in six Summer Olympics starting with the Seoul competition and ending at Beijing, won two medals in the women's 800 meter track event. She earned a bronze medal at Atlanta and a gold medal at Sydney (2000). Her medals are Mozambique's only two Olympic medals so far. BOTSWANA, GHANA, NAMIBIA, TANZANIA, and ZAMBIA are the Olympic delegations that won multiple bronze and silver medals but no gold medals yet. Some athletes have won a single bronze or silver medal for their countries so far:
● Gabriel Tiacoh (CÔTE D'IVOIRE, also named the Ivory Coast) won silver in the men's 400 meter track event at the Los Angeles (1984).
● Houssein Ahmed Salah (DJIBOUTI) won bronze in men's marathon at Seoul (1988).
● Zersenay Tadese (ERITREA, northwest of Djibouti) won bronze in the men's 10,000 meter track event at Athens (2004).
● Anthony Obame (GABON) won silver in men's 80 kg taekwondo at London (2012).
● Bruno Julie (MAURITIUS) won bronze in men's 51-54 kg bantamweight boxing at Beijing (2008).
● Issaka Daborg (NIGER) won bronze in men's 60-63.5 kg light-welterweight boxing at Munich (1972).
● El Hadj Amadou Dia Ba (SENEGAL) won silver in men's 400 meter hurdles at Beijing.
● Ismail Ahmed Ismail (SUDAN) won silver in men's 800 meter track event at Beijing.
● Benjamin Boukpeti (TOGO) won a bronze in men's K-1 slalom canoeing at Beijing.
