IVORY COAST, a West African country, is also called Côte d'Ivoire (the French spelling). Particularly in Africa, the largest city in most countries is usually the capital; this is not the case for Ivory Coast. With a population of several millions, Abidjan is the largest city in Ivory Coast. Abidjan is considered an economic capital and was the official capital until 1983, but it is not the official legislative capital anymore. It is located along the country's southern shore, which is north of the Ivory Coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The official capital status was located at Abidjan at one time but has since been relocated to a less-populated location to the north. This city with the designation of official national capital is Yamoussoukro; its population is even lower than Bouaké, which has the second highest population in Ivory Coast. Cities with fewer residents than Yamoussoukro include Daloa, Gagnoa, and Korhogo.
