Tahiti is about halfway between Australia and South America; another reason why it is easy to find on a globe or map is because it isn't surrounded by other island entities (like Solomon Islands, which is surrounded by Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, etc.). The capital and largest town of Tahiti is Papeete, which has more than 130,000 residents.
