Qatar achieved independence from the United Kingdom in September 1971, and National Day is celebrated in commemoration of Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani’s unification of the local peninsular area in 1878. According to National Geographic MapMaker (mapmaker.nationalgeographic.org) and other sources, the following items are major exports of QATAR: aluminemonee, ammonia, bottled water, cement, chemicals (alcohol, alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes, ammonia, ether, etc.), coal tar oil, crude petroleum, ether, fertilizer, hydrogen, hydrogenated hydrocarbons, ice cream and other dairy products, iron ore, iron products, legume flour, mineral ash residue, natural gas, packaged cereal, petroleum jelly and other products, plastic, plastic products, rice, scrap copper, seafood, ships, steel, sugar, sulfur, tea, tropical fruit, and wheat flour. According to the International Monetary Fund (data.imf.org), countries and territories buying and importing most of those exports (February 2017 statistics) include Japan (top importer), South Korea, India, China, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, France, Egypt, Italy, Spain, the United States, Indonesia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Turkey, Kuwait, Brazil, Malaysia, and South Africa.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ for QATAR in the Middle East features three critically endangered species and six endangered species — relatively low numbers compared to most other countries. Hawksbill Turtles, Longcomb Sawfish, and Sociable Plover birds are critically endangered in Qatar. Qatar's endangered species are the Egyptian Eagle, Great Knot bird, Hammerhead Shark, Saker Falcon, Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, and Steppe Eagle. While not endangered yet, the following species are some of Qatar's vulnerable species which could eventually become endangered: Asian Imperial Eagle, Blue Coral, Cactus Coral, Egyptian Spiny-Tailed Lizard, Hooktooth Shark, Socotra Cormorant, Spotted Eagle, Tawny Nurse Shark, Turtle Dove, Whale Shark, and White Oryx antelope.

Just as Oman is the only "O" country, there is only one country with the name starting in the letter Q — unless you consider Kazakhstan's alternate spelling, Qazaqstan. QATAR is a small Middle Eastern country with a short name having several different pronunciations: some people say "cutter" or "ka-tar" or "qwa-ter"! It is a peninsula jutting northward into the Persian Gulf. The capital and largest city is Doha, located on the eastern coastline. Qatar only borders Saudi Arabia on the southern border and is southeast of Bahrain, an island country.

Jutting out into the Persian Gulf from Saudi Arabia, QATAR has a population of over 1,800,000. While that number seems high for a tiny country like Qatar, its population density is only 67 per sq. km and 173 per sq. mi. The population is expected to grow about 44% from the year 2005 to 2050. A large percentage, 92%, live in urban settings.
By the way, Nasser Al-Attiya, who competed in archery at the London 2012 Olympics, won a bronze medal for the Qatar team.

QATAR is a relatively small, Middle Eastern country in western Asia with the highest GDP per capita in the world, according to 2013 data on the CIA World Factbook website. It is a peninsula projecting out into the Persian Gulf. The only bordering country is Saudi Arabia, which touches Qatar's southern border. The capital and largest-populated city of Qatar is Doha, spelled Ad Dawhah (cedilla under the first h) in Arabic. Even though the Hawar (Ḩawār) Islands are located very close to Qatar's west coast, they belong to Bahrain (↗), an island country located to the northwest. Speaking of islands, in satellite imagery you would notice on the eastern coast (above Doha) that there are several natural islands but also a developed, manmade island called The Pearl. A multi-lane bridge connects The Pearl and mainland Qatar. Ra's Rakan, an island also known as Jazīrat Ra's Rakan, is basically Qatar's small "hat" located at 
the top of the country. The currency is the Qatari Rial, and its ISO 4217 currency code is QAR.
