American Towns: Plevna

Five unincorporated villages in the UNITED STATES are named after a city thousands of miles away in Europe: Plevna (Pleven), home to about 100,000 people in northern BULGARIA. Residents chose to name their towns after Plevna because it was the site of the Siege of Plevna, a consequential and globally known battle of the Turko-Russian War in 1877. The five Plevna towns in the United States are found in the states of Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Montana. Approximate population figures for the towns in Kansas, Missouri, and Montana are listed on the GeoNames (geonames.org) website. The Alabama and Indiana versions might only have about a dozen residents each!
