Mermaid, Delaware
So small that no signs designate its existence, Mermaid is a populated place in the northern part of Delaware state in the UNITED STATES. Essentially a suburb of Wilmington to the east, the Mermaid area has suburban-style stores and restaurants and is home to Goldey-Beacom College. Commonly labeled as being located in Pike Creek Valley or Wilmington, Goldey-Beacom College provides education to over 600 undergrad and 1700 postgraduate students. Surrounding communities (most are neighborhoods or subdivisions) include Ainsley Woods, Eastburn Farms, Elsmere, Jarrell Farms, Limestone Hills, Newark, Newport, Pike Creek (and Pike Creek Valley), and Wilmington.

Delaware is a small state to begin with. Why must half or more of the population be described as living in "Wilmington" when there is already another "Wilmington" of significance in North Carolina (among other places)?
Hello Kaministquia,
Interesting observation you make! Wilmington, Delaware is quite large compared to most other cities in Delaware (and yet far smaller than cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, NYC, etc.), so I'm thinking that, for example, the Postal Service (USPS) doesn't mind having 70,000 residents in one city for mailing purposes. If a community is not incorporated (such as Mermaid), then residents tend to use the larger city for their mail and in identifying in which place they live. There could be ZIP Codes created for many places that are currently clumped under the Wilmington "umbrella" — but of course that would be a governmental decision made by the USPS and others. Regardless, I personally try to acknowledge specific place names, hence why I talked about Mermaid and the surrounding communities. Thanks for your comment!
