Water Facts

This PDF document from National Geographic Education's Geography Awareness Week tells an astounding tale of how much water is wasted when making products. Below are ways for you to lessen your water usage footprint.

  • Jeans — 2900 gallons
  • T-shirts — 713 gallons
  • 1 pound of beef — 1857 gallons
  • 1 pound of chicken — 469 gallons
  • 1 liter bottle of water — 3 liters
  • Beans — 43 gallons

  • Fix leaky faucets and toilets.
  • If your toilet is from 1992 and earlier, replace it with a newer, more efficient one.
  • If you water the lawn (I don't see the need to do that :D), do it during the cool morning hours to reduce evaporation.
  • My favorite tip: not leaving the water on while brushing your teeth! After all, the normal time it takes to thoroughly brush your teeth is 2 minutes. This will save many gallons.
