Officially known as the Republic of Niger (French: République du Niger), NIGER is a landlocked, mostly arid country situated in northwestern Africa and named after the 4,180 kilometer (2,597 mile) long Niger River. There are 7 bordering countries: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya, Mali, and Nigeria. The capital and most-populated city is Niamey.
