ITALY is the famously boot-shaped country located in Southern Europe. Italy borders four countries; Austria and Switzerland are north, France is west, and Slovenia is east/northeast. Italy is also north of Malta (tiny island country in the Mediterranean Sea), west of the Adriatic Sea and the countries of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro, northwest of the Ionian Sea, and northeast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The capital and largest city of Italy is Rome (Roma). Other cities in Italy include Bari, Bologna, Florence (Firenze), Genoa (Genova), Messina, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Turin, and Venice (Venezia). San Marino and Vatican City are enclave countries surrounded completely by Italy. Islands include the Aeolian Islands (also known as Lipari Islands or Isole Eolie), Arcipelago Tuscano, Isole Egadi, Isole Ponziane, Sardinia, and Sicily, among others. The currency is the Euro, and the previous currency was the Italian Lira until they changed to the Euro in 2002. The ISO 4217 currency code for the former Lira was ITL.
