The Amazing Race 32, Episodes 8 and 9 Mega Leg

The Amazing Race’s eighth and ninth episodes of Season 32 aired on Wednesday, November 25th and was set in the city of Hyderabad in south-central INDIA. This is a two-part Mega Leg with a total “TV time” of two hours. The Mega Leg concept has never before occurred in The Amazing Race history.

● Part 1 (8-9 PM Eastern Time) episode 8 info on CBS — Teams race through Hyderabad, India, where they must complete double the detours, double the roadblocks, and travel double the distance.

● “Put to the Test”: Teams performed smog tests on three auto rickshaws that were flagged over to the mobile smog-testing station on the roadside. Several teams — including Chee/Hung and Maddison/Riley— called the small vehicles “tuk-tuks,” which are similar vehicles found in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam but are called autos, rickshaws, or auto rickshaws in India. The smog test was performed by snaking a tube-like testing apparatus into the exhaust pipe. The apparatus records the exhaust’s carbon dioxide and smog levels and prints the data in a report for the auto rickshaw’s driver. Once teams performed this test on three vehicles from the street, then they received a Detour clue from a pollution-control technician.

Detour, choice between “Food App” or “Number Trap”: teams choosing the Food App option — Chee/Hung and Haley/Kaylynn — visited a building occupied by Swiggy, a major food delivery app in India. The two teams were instructed to visit a restaurant to pick up orders, but they had to rely on the Swiggy representative’s over-the-phone directions and not on GPS to find the restaurant. With the representative’s further communication, teams transported food deliveries to three customers located in various spots in the bustling city.

The number “zero” was possibly invented and first used in India. Teams choosing the Number Trap option — Aparna/Eswar, DeAngelo/Gary, James/Will, and Maddison/Riley — played a digital game where they looked for and selected ones and zeroes (binary numbers) on the screen. These numbers were then used to decipher a message: “You can find the next clue in the fourth floor bunker.”

Yield: teams visited the Qutb Shahi Tombs complex and found a Yield opportunity. James and Will activated their 20-minute hourglass to delay Haley and Kaylynn, who are nicknamed the “Blonde Bandits.”

● “Who’s Ready to Flip Their Lids” Roadblock at the Qutb Shahi Tombs: a team member grabbed a digital tablet, which had a realistic replica of the columned building. In the simulation, royal turban-wearing gentlemen were standing by the columns. The Roadblock participant found three out of eighteen digital turban wearers on the screen; once climbing to the upper level, he/she attempted to find the three matching “real-life counterparts” wearing similarly decorated turbans and saris. The three gentlemen were instructed to stand on the correct square in order to replicate the tablet screen’s spatial layout.

● Part 2 (9-10 PM Eastern Time) episode 9 info on CBS — Teams continue their race through Hyderabad, India.

Starting in the second part of the Mega Leg, teams remained in the city of Hyderabad but travelled by rickshaw to Charminar to find the Detour clue. Charminar is a mosque with four minarets constructed in the 16th century.

Detour, choice between “This” or “That”: outside Charminar in a busy market area, teams choosing “This” option tried to find the same seven bracelets worn by an ornately dressed woman. DeAngelo/Gary, James/Will, and Maddison/Riley chose this task.

Aparna/Eswar, Chee/Hung, and Haley/Kaylynn chose “That” option; they went to the Iqbal Dentist building to form a foam mold around customer’s teeth. The teams then sanded and polished an already-produced set of dentures and fit the device in a customer’s mouth to comfortable standards.

● “Getting the Royal Treatment”: nicknamed the “Mirror in the Sky,” Taj Falaknuma Palace was the next site on The Amazing Race itinerary. Teams dressed up like royalty and rode in a horse-drawn carriage toward yet another Yield opportunity. Haley and Kaylynn were delayed for 20 minutes yet again — this time by Maddison and Riley.

“Who Wants to Set Things Straight?” Roadblock: a teammate chose an elegant table place setting from several options and had to correctly set up ten settings at Taj Faluknuma’s 108-feet long table. They had to pay attention to the place setting’s exact measurements — dimensions (14” by 24”) of the overall setting, space between dishes, space from the table’s edge, etc. The palace’s table is currently the longest table in India — and likely in most other countries as well!

Pit Stop: outside the Taj Falaknuma Palace

● Entitled “Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty,” Episode 10 will take place in various locations in CAMBODIA.
