Azerbaijan's Flag
Formerly dynasties and empires for at least two thousand years, the current version of AZERBAIJAN in West Asia formed in the year 1991, the year when the Soviet Union dissolved and Azerbaijan adopted the current flag. Before the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan did exist as the first democratic republic in the Muslim world (even before Turkey), from 1917-20. Azerbaijan's flag today three equal-sized, horizontal stripes that are colored light blue, red, and green from top to bottom. In the center and on top of the red band, a white crescent moon is to the left of an eight-pointed star. According to Vexilla Mundi, the flag of Azerbaijan during its democratic republic governance in the early 1900s was similar to Azerbaijan's current flag. However, the crescent extended into the light blue and green bands; the star was larger but still within the red band. Flag image credit: Flagpedia.net
