The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the 3rd largest country in the world (practically tied with China) and is separated into 50 states and more than 3,100 counties. The United States share borders with Canada (north) and Mexico (south). The national capital is Washington, D.C. The 10 highest-populated cities in the USA (from 1st to 10th) are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Dallas, San Diego, and San Jose. Phoenix (in Arizona) is the most populated state capital; Indianapolis (in Indiana) is the most populated state capital east of the Mississippi River, but Atlanta (in Georgia) is considered larger when its sprawling metropolitan area is included. The currency is the United States Dollar, and the ISO 4217 currency is USD. Some territories and countries such as Ecuador, El Salvador, Marshall Islands, and Palau use the United States Dollar. The United States is surrounded by large waterbodies such as the Pacific Ocean (west), Atlantic Ocean (east), and the Gulf of Mexico (southeast). The USA is also home to the Great Lakes, most of which are shared with Canada: Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, and Lake Superior. Lake Michigan is completely within the USA.
