Finland

Grolier map

Partially north of the Arctic Circle, FINLAND (Suomi) is located in Northern Europe. Finland is north of Estonia, west of Russia, east of Sweden, and Norway borders Finland a little bit to the northwest. The Gulf of Finland separates Estonia from Finland, while the Gulf of Bothnia separates central and north-central Sweden from Finland. According to Encyclopædia Britannica, Finland’s population in the year 2020 was about 5,533,000 and was ranked 115th among populations of the whole world’s countries, dependencies, and territories. The capital and most-populated city is Helsinki. Other cities include Hämeenlinna, Lahti, Mikkeli, Oulu, Rovaniemi barely south of the Arctic Circle, Tampere, Turku, and Vaasa. Starting in 2002, Finnish residents used the Euro as their currency. The previous currency was the Finnish Markka, which had FIM as the the ISO 4217 currency code.
